Second place for Slappendel at Thüringen Rundfahrt
July 22, 2010 - Filed under: Testteam
Iris Slappendel (NED) delivered the second podium finish for Cervélo TestTeam today within 24 hours of teammate Charlotte Becker’s (GER) third place finish. Slappendel sprinted out of a successful break away to second place in the third stage of the International Thüringen Rundfahrt. The winner of the 128.7 km long stage around Greiz was Adrie Visser (NED). Third place went to Marta Bastianelli (ITA) just ahead of GC leader Olga Zabelinskaja (RUS). With here fourth place finish today, she remains in the lead of the overall ranking. “We were lucky today, the weather forecast predicted rain but it was dry until the end of the race,” said Egon van Kessel, Sports Director, Cervélo TestTeam. “In the 128.7 km long stage, a break away of about 35 riders escaped successfully with Cervélo TestTeam riders Charlotte Becker, Regina Bruins (NED) and Iris Slappendel. After a while the group split, with fourteen riders in the lead group with Iris among them. In the final sprint, Iris was strong and made the podium. Charlotte Becker was not unfortunately in the lead group at the end and lost some places in the GC where she now sits in seventh. For the last three stages our goal will be a stage win and to have a good preparation for the World Cup next week in Sweden.” The fourth stage of the International Thüringen Rundfahrt, the individual time trial, will be carried out tomorrow around Schleiz on a 23.3 km course. Cervélo TestTeam riders are well known as strong time trial riders and therefore hoping for a couple of good results.
