Iris Slappendel (NED) claimed a solo victory today in the sixth and last stage of the 23rd International Thüringen Rundfahrt over 134.5 km around Zeulenroda in a racing time of 3:50.26h. The Dutch Cervélo TestTeam rider clearly won with an advantage of 1.34 ahead of Trixi Worrack (Noris Cycling) from Germany and Andrea Bosman (NED – Netherlands National Team). Olga Zabelinskaja (RUS - Safi-Pasta Zara) saved her overall victory with her 18th spot in the peloton while Iris Slappendel moved into the overall ranking with her solo win ranked 8th, 7.48 behind Zabelinskaja. “I am just so happy,” said Iris Slappendel, the smiling winner.” It was my nicest victory ever. It is a fantastic day. When I made the final attack out of the break away, which was not working well anymore, I just took my chance and pushed. I made the gap very quickly and 10 km ahead of the finish I had 50 seconds. I kept on going full speed towards the finish. I really enjoyed the last 2 km as I was sure that I would win the race.” “It was an amazing win today. It was one of the nicest victories I have seen this season, it was just very impressive,” said Egon van Kessel, Sports Director, Cervélo TestTeam. “The race today fit very well with our tactic. We wanted to have a break away and it worked. A break away with about 8 riders, including Iris, built up about 60 km from the finish. When the second group came closer, Iris attacked and pushed all the way to the finish. The attack came with about 20 km to go and Iris was really strong and confident and never looked back. Chapeau Iris – it was a great victory.” Next Friday, July 30 Cervélo TestTeam will have their next race at the World Cup in Sweden where they will defend their team time trial victory from last year.
